Your tow vehicle has its own brakes, but when you are pulling a 10,000-pound fifth wheel down I-75 through Tampa Bay traffic, the trailer brakes are doing a significant share of the work. The wheel bearings are carrying the full weight of the loaded trailer through every mile of road. The hubs hold all of it together. These are not maintenance items you can defer until something feels wrong — by the time you feel a bearing failure or a brake problem, the situation is already dangerous.

Why These Three Systems Are Treated Together
Brakes, bearings, and hubs are physically integrated at the wheel end of your trailer axle. The hub is the central component — it mounts to the axle spindle on the bearings and carries the wheel and tire. The brake drum (on electric drum brake systems) or brake rotor (on disc brake systems) is part of the hub assembly. The electric brake magnet or caliper acts on that drum or rotor to slow the trailer.
When you service one of these components properly, you are typically accessing all three. A bearing repack requires removing the hub. A brake inspection requires the same access. Doing them together at the correct intervals is more efficient and more thorough than treating them as separate jobs.
Wheel Bearings: The Most Overlooked Safety Item on a Trailer
Wheel bearings allow the hub to rotate smoothly on the axle spindle. They are packed with grease that lubricates the rolling elements and prevents metal-to-metal contact. Over time and mileage, that grease breaks down, becomes contaminated with moisture, or simply gets pushed out of the bearing race. When the lubrication fails, the bearing runs hot, wears rapidly, and can seize — which means the wheel stops turning while the trailer is still moving.
A seized bearing is not a roadside inconvenience. It is a fire risk, a wheel separation risk, and a loss-of-control event.
How Often to Repack or Replace Bearings
The standard service interval for trailer wheel bearings is every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or once per year, whichever comes first. For owners who do not put high mileage on their trailer annually, the annual calendar interval is the controlling factor.
In Florida, the calendar interval matters more than it might elsewhere. Humidity accelerates moisture contamination of bearing grease, particularly in trailers that sit in storage for extended periods. Salt air near the coast — common throughout the Palmetto, Sarasota, and Tampa Bay area — is especially aggressive on bearing surfaces and spindle hardware. A trailer that sat through a Florida summer in outdoor storage should have its bearings inspected before the next trip, regardless of when they were last serviced.
Bearing Buddy and EZ Lube Systems
Many trailers are equipped with Bearing Buddy caps or EZ Lube axles, which allow grease to be added to the bearing cavity without removing the hub. These systems are useful for adding grease between full service intervals, but they do not replace a proper bearing inspection and repack. Grease can be added to a bearing that is already contaminated or worn — the only way to know the true condition of the bearing is to remove the hub, clean the old grease out completely, inspect the bearing races and rollers, and repack with fresh grease.
Warning Signs of Bearing Problems
- Heat at the hub after driving. After a trip, carefully touch the center of each hub. It should be warm but not hot. A hub that is too hot to hold your hand on for more than a second or two has a bearing problem.
- Grinding or rumbling noise from the wheel area that changes with speed or disappears when you change lanes (shifting weight off that axle).
- Wobble or play in the wheel when the trailer is jacked up and you rock the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions.
- Grease on the inside of the wheel or on the brake components — a sign that the bearing seal has failed and grease is migrating outward.
Trailer Brakes: Electric Drum vs. Hydraulic Disc
Most fifth wheels and travel trailers use one of two brake systems. Understanding which system your trailer has determines what maintenance it needs.
Electric Drum Brakes
Electric drum brakes are the most common system on towable RVs. A brake controller in the tow vehicle sends a signal to an electromagnet inside the brake drum. The magnet engages a rotating drum and activates the brake shoes, which press against the inside of the drum to slow the trailer.
Components that wear and require service:
- Brake magnets — the electromagnet that initiates braking. Magnets wear against the drum surface and eventually lose their ability to generate sufficient force. A worn magnet produces weak, inconsistent braking. Magnets should be inspected annually and replaced when the friction surface is worn down or the magnet is cracked.
- Brake shoes — the friction material that contacts the drum. Shoes wear with use and should be measured at each service. Worn shoes reduce stopping power and, if allowed to wear through to the metal backing, will score the drum surface and require a more expensive repair.
- Brake drums — the rotating surface the shoes contact. Drums can develop grooves, hot spots, or out-of-round conditions from wear or heat. A drum that is worn beyond its minimum thickness specification must be replaced, not resurfaced.
- Brake adjusters — the mechanism that maintains the correct gap between the shoes and drum as the shoes wear. Self-adjusting systems require periodic inspection to confirm they are functioning; manual adjusters need to be set correctly at each service.
Service interval: Inspect electric drum brakes annually or every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. Full brake shoe replacement is typically needed every 20,000 to 40,000 miles depending on use, load, and terrain.
Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Hydraulic disc brakes are found on higher-end fifth wheels and some travel trailers. They use a hydraulic actuator — either surge-actuated or electric-over-hydraulic — to apply a caliper against a rotor. Disc brakes generally provide more consistent stopping power and better heat dissipation than drum brakes, which matters on heavy fifth wheels.
Components that wear and require service:
- Brake pads — the friction material in the caliper. Pads wear faster than drum brake shoes under heavy use and should be measured at each service interval.
- Rotors — the disc that the pads clamp against. Rotors can warp from heat, develop surface rust from sitting (especially in Florida's humidity), or wear below minimum thickness.
- Calipers — the hydraulic clamp that holds the pads. Caliper pistons can seize from corrosion, particularly on trailers that sit unused for extended periods.
- Hydraulic lines and actuator — the fluid delivery system. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can cause corrosion inside the lines and actuator.
Service interval: Inspect hydraulic disc brakes annually. Brake fluid should be flushed every two years or sooner if moisture contamination is suspected.
Hubs: The Component That Holds Everything Together
The hub is the structural center of the wheel end assembly. It houses the bearings, carries the brake drum or rotor, and mounts the wheel. Hubs fail less often than bearings or brake components, but when they do, the failure is serious.
What causes hub problems:
- Bearing failure that was not caught in time. A bearing that runs dry or seizes generates extreme heat that can damage the hub bore, warp the drum surface, and in severe cases cause the hub to crack or the spindle to score.
- Corrosion. Steel hubs in Florida's coastal environment are vulnerable to rust, particularly on the spindle bore and the drum surface. Surface rust on a drum is normal after sitting and typically wears off quickly. Deep pitting or corrosion that affects the bearing seat is a replacement situation.
- Overloading. Consistently exceeding the axle's weight rating accelerates wear on the hub, bearings, and spindle simultaneously.
Inspection points at each service:
- Check the hub bore for scoring or damage from bearing movement
- Inspect the drum surface (on drum brake systems) for grooves, cracks, or heat discoloration
- Verify the hub nut torque after reassembly — an improperly torqued hub nut is a common cause of premature bearing failure
- Inspect the spindle for scoring, corrosion, or damage to the bearing surfaces
The Full Wheel-End Service: What It Involves
A complete wheel-end service on a fifth wheel or travel trailer covers all three systems in one visit. Here is what the process looks like at a qualified shop:
- Raise and support the trailer on jack stands with the wheels clear of the ground
- Remove the wheel and tire to access the hub assembly
- Remove the hub — pull the outer bearing, slide the hub off the spindle, remove the inner bearing and seal
- Clean and inspect — degrease the hub bore, spindle, and bearing races; inspect all surfaces for wear, scoring, or damage
- Inspect brake components — measure shoe thickness or pad thickness, check drum or rotor condition, inspect magnets or calipers, verify adjuster function
- Replace worn components — shoes, magnets, seals, bearings, or drums as needed
- Repack bearings with fresh grease appropriate for the application
- Reinstall hub with a new grease seal, torque the hub nut to specification, and install a new cotter pin
- Adjust brakes to the correct shoe-to-drum clearance
- Reinstall wheel and torque lug nuts to specification
- Verify brake controller output with a test drive
This process is repeated at each wheel end. A tandem-axle trailer has four wheel ends; a triple-axle fifth wheel has six.
How Florida Conditions Affect Service Intervals
Owners who tow primarily in Florida should treat the annual service interval as a firm deadline rather than a guideline. Several factors accelerate wear compared to drier climates:
Humidity and moisture contamination. Bearing grease absorbs moisture over time, particularly in trailers that sit in storage. Moisture in the grease promotes corrosion on bearing surfaces and reduces lubrication effectiveness. A trailer that sat through a Florida summer — even in covered storage — should have its bearings inspected before the next season.
Salt air. Coastal areas from Palmetto south through Sarasota and north through the Tampa Bay area expose trailer components to salt-laden air that accelerates corrosion on brake hardware, hub surfaces, and spindle components. Trailers that are stored near the coast or regularly towed on coastal roads need more frequent inspection.
Heat. Florida's summer temperatures accelerate grease breakdown in both bearings and brake components. Trailers that sit in direct sun for months can experience grease migration and dry-out in the bearing cavity even without being driven.
Frequent short trips. Bearings that never fully warm up — common on trailers used for short local hauls — can accumulate condensation inside the hub cavity. Moisture that would normally evaporate on a longer trip stays in contact with the bearing surfaces.
